Helsinki

A lovely first day looking around Helsinki 🇫🇮 , we visited the observatory and talked about the history of Finland. The building we are stood outside is the Helsinki Cathedral but who can tell me what statue is on the square outside?

  1. Hi sir this is Isabel Sirene and Tilly Finland sounds really good hope you are having a great time we will be exited to see you when you come back. We cant wait till we go on the cardiff trip with you!.

    1. I am really looking forward to the Cardiff trip too. I am having a fantastic time and it has been great to see all the different schools. It has made me realise that we need to become a lot more independent in Class 3!!

  2. Hyvää huomenta Herra, apparently means ‘Good morning Sir’ in Finnish. I’ve borrowed Zoe’s account! Glad you arrived safely, you have certainly been busy since you’ve arrived. The photos and blog of your expedition are great and lots of interesting things. Charlie likes the fact you can get bear meat in cans! You’ll have to bring some back to sample. The classrooms and schools do look great. I watched a film called ‘Where To Invade Next’ (American documentary really) where they talked about the benefits of the Finnish education system. They are more creative subject orientated, limited homework and testing and children control much more of their education (compared to America) All the teachers they interviewed had wonderful things to say. I’m not sure we’d get the same comments over here! Lots of things reflected in your blog. I might try working under the tables one day, Sophie might like that. Oh and program a robot to act as teacher while you’re away!

The children are reading you comments and, hopefully, writing a worthwhile comment. We started a science investigation with germinating seed. As it’s so warm in your class all the cress has sprouted already! Cress for lunch then.

See you soon Sir, Mr Reed.

    1. Kiitos Mr Reed
The education system is quite different here but the idea of limited homework and testing I have found to be a myth. Most schools have homework daily and are tested on a weekly basis (the teacher writes the test). The informality of lessons and the classrooms are very interesting and seem to work. The independence of the pupils is amazing. Small tin of bear costs around £20, very much a delicacy here along with elk and reindeer. Good to see all the comments and I hope you have a good week. Thank you Zoe for allowing Mr Reed to use your account!
